New York food recommendations

So I’m in New York for the next 2 weeks (6-18), and like last time want to do this sampling of high-quality cuisine from around the world. Meals are expense-able so cost isn’t so much of an issue, but given that I’ll be eating 13 dinners  there I want to choose the places carefully.

Off the cuff, this is what I broadly want to eat. So plis to be recommending where to go:

  • high-quality thin crust pizza
  • pasta
  • hummus-falafel-…
  • mexican stuff – i’ll go to chipotle at least once for sure. any other places?
  • thai – something I missed out on on my last trip there.
  • ethiopian – considering I don’t get to eat this in India I want to eat this at least twice
  • french
  • Korean – I’m going to Hangawi once again for sure. Sheer awesomeness it is

Ok I’m sure there are other cuisines whose existence I’m not even aware of, so if you think there’s something I might like plis to be recommending. And if you live in NYC and want to meet for a meal, let me know. We’ll plan something.

And here is the list of places I went to during my last visit.

Update: I’ll be staying at the Hilton Millennium, next to the WTC site.

  1. Damn. Did my previous comment go missing? Unfortunately, I’m in London from 6-18 (and longer in either direction.) Sucks but that’s how it is.

high-quality thin crust pizza – Keste pizzeria, the village
pasta – no clue. But for non-pasta, non-pizza Italian, there’s awesome ‘Inoteca NYC’
    hummus-falafel-… Gazala Place. Druze cuisine
mexican stuff – Tio Pepe, the village
    thai –Spice Market, meatpacking district
ethiopian – Queen of Sheba. Also there are 2 Meskerems
french – Regular french is slabs of meat. Try “socca” at Nizza in the theatre district instead
    Korean – Any damn place in Koreatown = 33rd & 3rd

    1. seems like we’re destined not to meet in NY!

so the problem with the east village is that it’s too far – no train connectivity. so slisha pain. realized that when i went in search of this motorino place today

  2. Have been a reader here for a while….

For Falafel / Hummus – go to Taim’s Falafel at 7th Ave and Waverly Place – repeated NYC Food award winner, is excellent! Warning: hardly any sitting space, its really more pick up and go…

Pasta – Vapiano at University Place and 12th St. Interesting veggie options…. its a ‘make your own, tell em what you want in your pasta’ concept…

Thai – Jaiya Thai on the East side in the 20s

Ethiopian – Queen of Sheba – 10th Ave in the 50s…

Mexican – Rosa Mexicana – google locations, they have a couple around the city. This is high-end / relatively expensive, but lovely food….

Dunno abt the thin crust thing, but NYC’s BESTEST pizza (NYC style – roll up the slice) is at Bleecker St Pizza at Bleecker and 7th Ave.

And I would recommend trying out Sushi Samba on ParkAve in Midtown – great veggie Japanese / sushi options. But this is kinda expensive too…

  3. Welcome to this part of the world, again 🙂

Try a Russian Bakery if you get your hands on one! Another hard-to-get-in-India thing..

  4. Sam’s Falafel near the financial district – carry some cash

Most any Italian restaurant near Mulberry (check Yelp.com for references)

    Chelsea Market for excellent seafood

Chipotle isn’t great mexican food – I find it too bland and do not entertain any of their add-on sauces as compensation. But then I do not know any other mexican places in NYC (I’m from TX 🙂

A trip to the Grand Central market always produces excellent surprises

  5. been a reader here for sometime now…

For pizza i was gonna recommend adriennes (their crust and sauce clinch it for me), you might want to give lombardi’s on spring street a shot! And follow it up with awesome “flavored rice pudding (payasam) with optional toppings” at Rice to Riches nearby. If you are in the Greenwich village area, check out arturo’s coal oven pizza on Houston street.

Instead of pasta, lemme suggest the “Risotteria” on Bleecker Street! For dessert you can have awesome gelato at GROM nearby.

The best Thai food that i have had is at Pam’s thai (the one on 49th street and 9th av and NOT their branch a couple of block south)

Check out “bali nusa” for indonesian cuisine, “Ariana Afghan Kebab” for afghan style food and “Turkish Cusiine” for Turkish Cuisine :). All of them on 9th Avenue between 45th – 53rd streets.

Queen of Sheeba for ethiopian would be good! Though if you happen to go to DC, then Zed’s is Awesome!

Mamoun’s falafels on Macdougal St. is cheap and awesome. Especially after a drunken night!

Check out “Ino” on Bedford street for some delectable sides and wine.

“Alta” in greenwich village is an amazing greek tapas bar. Its on the pricey side. But the food is just delicious!

If you want to experience some subtlety in indian cuisine, you HAVE to go to “Tabla”. It is pricey. But totally worth it! Go there with an open mind! You will NOT get this in India.

  6. Thanks for all of the effort on this web site. Kate delights in setting aside time for investigation and it is easy to see why. Many of us notice all of the lively way you create practical guidelines on the website and encourage response from people on the issue while our favorite child is in fact starting to learn a lot. Enjoy the rest of the year. Your doing a useful job.
